Rated Flow

Each turbine is designed for a particular rated flow. This is selected to suit the expected availability of water. A turbine can pass a bit more than the rated flow and can reduce its flow to nearly zero*, but it has the best efficiency when the flow is close to the Rated Flow.

* Francis Turbines have a rough zone of operation at approximately 40% of Rated Flow. Operating continuously in this rough zone can damage the turbine.
